Sheets washed right

Sheets are the textile the body meets longest. Correct washing extends their life and improves the night in the same motion.

Wash weekly, rinse hard

Sixty degrees, mild detergent, and a long rinse keep sheets hygienic without harshness. Fabric softener is again the enemy; it builds a film that both dulls cotton and irritates some skin.

Rotate at least two sets so each rests between washes, which fibre of every kind appreciates. Dry fully, ideally on air rather than a radiator, whose direct heat yellows cotton over a season.

Buy for the mattress, not the photo

Deep pockets and a measured mattress outlast pattern decisions. A high-thread-count sheet badly sized for the bed wrinkles nightly and wears at the corners first.

Plain white or pale colours tolerate the hot washes that hygiene asks for. The patterned set can visit; the white set does the work, which is a division seen throughout this journal.
